Washer Repair and Troubleshooting

Questions start to roll in…

  • Is your washing machine acting up?
  • Does it work at all?
  • Does it have problems draining?
  • Does it leak?
  • s it producing too much noise?
  • Are there stains in the tub?

When one is faced with any of these problems, a washer repair, like a Maytag washer repair or a Maytag dryer repair or even a Bosch dishwasher repair, may need to be called. But before doing this, check the tips below first as there is a possibility that such problem is commonly encountered and some simple troubleshooting may do the trick.

Maytag Washer Repair – Does it work at all?

If the washing machine does not work at all, there are two possibilities that are capable of being solved by a non professional. First is the possibility that it is not plugged in. This may sound absurd but it does happen that the machine just needs to be plugged in (or plugged in properly) to a power outlet. It is also possible that there has been a power malfunction in the circuit breaker, for which case an electrician, not a washer repair, has to be called.

It is also possible that the lid switch is busted. If this is the case the washing machine will not work at all. This is not much of a problem. If the washing machine does not work because the lid switch is not working, a new lid switch may be bought.

Washer Repair – Does it have problems draining?

If the washing machine is working but the water is not draining out of the machine, some troubleshooting may also be done before calling for a repairman. First is to check first the draining hose. If it is tangled, that probably is the reason for the problem. Untangle the same to fix the problem. If this is not the issue, check if there is something stuck in the drain. Maybe a cloth, a toy, a sock, a rag or anything that could fit perfectly would cause the hose not to drain. Remove any blockage if this is the case. If the reason is a broken or a busted material in the drainage pump then that could be easily replaced.

There may be times when the machine does not spin or pump out water, the problem may be a pump pulley that is frozen. This is the tool responsible for draining or pumping the water out of the tub. If this seems to be non-functional, it is best to remove it from the machine and do a manual rotation of the pulley. If it rotates, there is no problem with it. There may be some other problem not related to the pump. But if it is hard up in rotating or if it does not freely rotate, then it is indeed frozen. In such a case, the only solution is to replace the pump itself.

The worst problem connected to drainage is when the machine pumps out water but that same water goes back in the machine. This is the worst because it means no work is getting done. What is happening is that the clothes get washed and the dirt from it goes with the water which should simultaneously be pumped out of the machine. But if this is not happening, then the same dirty water gets mixed with the clothes. The possible reason for such problem is that the tub has a slow drain. This could be because of a blockage in the hose. Make sure to check this and remove anything stuck in it. It could also be that the hose is lower than the cabinet where the machine is. In this case, it is best to put up an air gap.

Washer Repair  – Does it leak?

If the washing machine leaks all the time it could be that one of the hoses that fill the tub is leaking. If that’s the case, depending on the gravity of the leak, tighten the hose or replace it with a brand new one. It could also be that the main seal of the tub is where the leak is coming from. If such is the case a replacement for the seal may still be possible. It could also be that the pump is where the leak is coming from. Check this and if still possible, try replacing the pump with a new one.

If the leak only happens every time the tub is getting filled it is possible that such leak is because of a crack or a breakage in the rubber tube that is located between the water-inlet valve and the inlet spout. In such a case, the rubber tube may be replaced.

The problem could also be caused by a crack or a breakage in the inlet spout. This can be spotted close to the upper part on the tub for the main clothes. This spout is the one responsible for the water to be directed into the tub. This needs to be replaced of this is where the leak is coming from.

Is it producing too much noise?

If the problem is that the machine is producing too much noise when spinning, then the source of the problem could just be due to the wrong distribution of the clothes in the tub. If this is the case then stop the machine and redistribute the clothes in the tub so that the clothes are balanced and the machine would stop making noise.

Are there stains in the tub?

If there are stains in the tub due to soap scum and lime deposits, there are products that can be used to clean it making it stain-free again. These products contain chemicals that will help whiten the tub or get rid of the stain immediately after its application. Even if the build up of stains started years ago, effective products can make them go away. There is no need to brush it or wipe it with something. It will do the work it is made for while the machine is spinning.

If one does not want to buy the product specifically made for washing machine, then she can do it the old-school way. One may use soap and water and gently wash the walls of the machine until it goes back to its original color. This may take a while but it could also give a considerable result rather than calling a washer repair.
